cain razers
Equal parts punk and pop, the cain razers burst onto the Richmond, Virginia scene in the late 1980s determined to show that great songs and strong ensemble playing beat hype and fads anytime.
Singer/guitarist Mark Nuckols and guitarist/vocalist Scott Pippen tapped former The Limit basher/singer J. Mark Scott to provide a percussive wall behind Nuckols liquid vocals, Pippin's lead pyrotechnics.
Their sonic puzzle's final piece arrived in bassist Mykle Lyons (@myklelyons), who, coupled with his writing and singing talents, infused his jazz style into the band's rock foundation. The cains performed at Richmond-area clubs, colleges, and benefits, drawing increasing crowds. The quality of their originals, however, helped them stand out. Pippen later amicably departed, with local blues legend Mark Saurs taking over lead duties. The band plugged in and on, later weathering the loss of Lyons and Saurs as well.
The band has released two recordings; the fifteen-song powerhouse "After Five Long Years," the title reflecting the length of time it took from the beginning of the project until it saw daylight. The band had added guitarist/keyboardist/singer/songwriter DeLayne Chowen and bassist/singer/songwriter Brian Sulser. The other recording, entitled "Two-Track and Two Live," was a compilation of all original material that didn't make it onto the "After..." album.
Regarding the "After…" recording, one American music magazine noted, "If a good, melodic effort is what the band was after, they have it," while a Dutch magazine gave seven out of ten stars. The band's website, www.cainrazers.com, contains more information, including photos from their numerous shows, including an opening gig for The Bodeans that garnered rave reviews for the cain razers.
